DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling is an invasive procedure where a fine needle is inserted into the skin and muscle. It has been shown to immediately increase pressure pain threshold and range of motion, decrease muscle tone, and decrease pain in patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

Its suggested mechanisms of action include:

Local Twitch Response: Dry needling can elicit a ‘local twitch response’ which is an involuntary spinal reflex resulting in a localized contraction of the affected muscles that are being dry-needled. Local twitch response can lead to alteration in the length and tension of muscle fibres and stimulate mechanoreceptors like A Beta fibres.

Effects on Blood Flow: Sustained contraction of taut muscle bands in trigger points might cause local ischemia and hypoxia. Dry needling causes vasodilation in the small blood vessels leading to increased muscle blood flow and oxygenation.

Neurophysiological effects: Dry needling may produce local and central nervous responses to restore homeostasis at the site of the trigger point which results in a reduction in both central and peripheral sensitization to pain

MYOFASCIAL CUPPING THERAPY

Myofascial cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern practice used to treat a variety of conditions.

It involves placing cups at certain points on a person’s skin, usually where there is pain / tension. The therapist creates suction in the cups, which pulls against the skin.
According to a 2017 analysis the suction involved in cupping stimulates local blood flow. This action also stimulates the body’s heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) system, which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neurotransmitter regulation effects.

Benefits of cupping that the review authors cite may include:

  • pain reduction

  • muscle relaxation

  • improved blood circulation

  • activation of the immune system

Cupping can leave round bruises on a person’s skin, where blood vessels burst after exposure to the procedure’s suction effects, these are usually painless.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE

Massage specifically for pregnant clients.
Often when pregnant, we are treated as though we are extremely delicate and sometimes even excluded from being able to have treatments done.
With my background in Sports & Remedial work, I feel I am in a good position to offer more targeted massage to help ease the aches and pains that often accompany our bodies changing due to pregnancy.

A Pregnancy Massage appointment will contain similar to that of Soft Tissue Therapy, but positions are adapted to offer a comfortable treatment for the client.
